What's the best way to organize a nation militarily?
What questions must be asked to answer this question? Can eIreland organize the same way that, for example, the eUS does? Is it better to have one military unit or to encourage independent smaller units? Is it best to work under the MoD directly or to allow each unit to carve its own path through the grooves laid down by the mechanical authorities (Cp/Congress).
This is an interesting question because it touches many of the larger ideological/strategic questions that are special to eIreland. Being a small nation we're so much more "maneuverable" strategically in one sense, yet this creates greater extremes of risk and reward for different strategies as well.
My personal view is that it would be best to have the vast majority of eIreland in one military unit taking direct orders from the MoD. Why?
- The DO is an extremely valuable communication tool and "damage gun" (from the strats pov).
- We are "lucky" to have a population small enough that we could be so organized
- Such an MU would be right about the optimum size that many other world MUs are. If we had more citizens we might need more MUs, but we only have ~100 as such.
- A unified military force would be much more visible internationally than 10 very small ones.
At the same time I think there is room for some small effective units, and I understand many people's desire/situation which leads them to not join a national MU.
And interesting idea:
I believe it was Bhane who said that Libertad was actually valuable to eIreland in a sense, because it would gain us international support by assisting small nations without being a liability to the eIrish govt. Because they are an expressly independent MU we get benefit from their international image, but non of the backlash for when they step on politically touchy feet.
Thoughts?
